We have now finally made it to Florida! We arrived in St. Augustine early this morning after two days at sea, which turned out to be quite a cold experience. Henrik found great pleasure in sailing again, though, in spite of the cold weather - and I managed as well.

Like last week, it was our plan this week to do an overnight sail in the Atlantic in order to move south more quickly, but once again we continued in the ICW. Last week, too much wind was holding us back, and this week, there was too little wind!

Traditionally, boating and boat ownership have been viewed as lifestyle choices which, to a certain extent, resist the ups and downs of economic flux. The desire and passion to get afloat and enjoy all that sailing has to offer results in many people owning boats despite, rather than because of, the financial consequences of so doing. Whilst those considerations still apply to areas of the second-hand, brokerage boat market, the long tail of the recent recessions in the UK and mainland Europe and the general global downturn, has had a real impact upon the marketplace, which has continued during 2014.
The Route Du Rhum is a single handed ocean race, from St Malo to Guadeloupe; some 3,500 miles along the famous Rhum line. It's a physical and mental sailing challenge - one of the most admired in yacht racing - where skippers need to look after their boats through rough weather, to avoid breakages which can end their race, or reduce speed, whilst still pushing the boats to their absolute limits! There is little opportunity for sleep in these fast and furious sailing conditions, and almost anything can and does happen. This year, out of the 90 boats that started the race, 26 retired with varying problems, such as keels falling off, leaks, damage, collisions and technical problems. Just completing the race is a real achievement!

We have now reached Oriental in North Carolina, which is about 20 nm from Beaufort, mile 205 on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). From Beaufort you can leave the ICW and go out in the Atlantic, which we’ve met several boats that do, and which we also consider doing ourselves. We don’t sail more than 4-5 knot an hour, and we normally don’t sail more than 5-6 hours a day. Miami is at mile 1085, so with 25 nm a day, it’s a long way to Miami!

Anne Caseneuve on her Trimaran ANEO wins the Rhum class with a 2 day lead on her rivals. There's now a real fight for 2nd, 3rd, 4th place with Sir Robin on Grey Power currently lying in third place.
The Rhum class is going to prove an exciting finish. Anne Caseneuve is a clear leader now 600 miles ahead of her nearest competitor and if she can keep damage free, then she should win the Rhum class on her trimaran. This week we have made our start at the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), which is the Americans’ opportunity to sail inside the Atlantic coastline from Norfolk in the Chesapeake Bay to Key West on the southern tip of Florida - a total of app. 1300 miles. From Norfolk, which is Mile Zero on the ICW, you can either sail through the Virginia Cut or through the beautiful Dismal Swamp Canal with the catchy slogan. “Do the Dismal”.
Loick Peyron who has won the Ultimate class for the 2014 Route Du Rhum with a new race record. Loick was the substitute Skipper who replaced Armel Le Cléac'h who was injured just prior to the race. He has dedicated the win to Banque Populaire's injured skipper who shared his strategies, technical data and practical tips when Loick took over the Banque Populaire for the race.
If people still believed that you would improve at your workplace by spending a challenging weekend in the woods, sleeping in bivouacs, and killing your own supper, cruisers should be at a premium at the labour market, when they return home. Sometimes it’s just like the challenges are lined up waiting for you to take care of it – also even though the challenges might be self-inflicted.
Conrad Humphreys the british Skipper from Plymouth, racing the Class 40 "Cat Phones" was making good progress, great speeds and caught up some miles, but then disaster struck when he was dismasted yesterday afternoon, putting him out of the race. A bitterly disappointed Conrad has received some diesel from a passing ship and is now heading for the Portuguese mainland.

The first day of racing was difficult with squally conditions. The Skippers and crews have had a hectic last month preparing for the race. The first three days of the race will be the most difficult with the (TSS Traffic Separation Scheme Shipping Lanes), other competitors and the weather! Grey Power and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston headed North away from the pack into clearer waters and reefed sensibly down so as not to damage the boat at this early stage.
